Senior James Cooper is in the Virginia Musical Theatre company production of “The Little Mermaid.” He is part of the ensemble in the production and is “excited” to be a part of this Disney classic.

James said one day he was scrolling through Facebook and saw a notification pop up on the screen.

“I looked further into it and realized it was the auditions for ‘The Little Mermaid.’ I tried out, and I got in.” said James.

Since James was not cast until Sept. 12, he said he has been incredibly busy preparing for the show.

“We only had three weeks of rehearsal because our first practice was Sept. 13. We’ve been practicing six days a week and practices run from 6-10 p.m. On the weekends, practice usually runs from 12-6 p.m.,” James said.

“My favorite number is ‘Under The Sea.’ It gets my energy up, and I love the uniqueness to it. It’s a hip-hop number, but it’s hard to tell that it’s hip-hop,” James said.

The production of “The Little Mermaid” is showing at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach on Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
